Welcome to the Apistogramma Keeper and Breeder Site (AKBS). With this initiative we hope to form a global network of Apistogramma keepers and breeders. This network should spread knowledge and the different species of Apistogramma around the world and help other keepers and breeders with 'fresh blood' without damaging nature. That way we would like to make sure that the different species stay healthy. Because of (rain)forests getting destroyed, mining and other ecological disasters in South America the AKBS also hopes to save species from extinction.

At the moment more than 100 different Apistogramma's have been described. Since they live  in the most inaccessible parts of the rainforest all over South America we expect at least 300 extra species will be discovered in the next 10 years.

The site was initiated in September 2005. And breeders from all over the world are invited to add their stock of Apistogramma to the list. It is possible to look in the list of species and find other breeders or look at a specific continent and country to search for a breeder in your own country. Please fill out the reply form and send us your data! We will bring breeders in contact with each other by forwarding your questions or comments. We will not send e-mail addresses to you and there are no other e-mail addresses stated on this site than the one below.

October 2005: we decided to add an extra page with other species of South American dwarf cichlids.

November 2005: we would like to invite everyone that is interested in and keeps Apistogramma to contribute! We had feedback that people where afraid to contribute, because this was a site for (semi-)commercial breeders. NO this is a site for everyone that loves the Apistogramma and would like to keep them as healthy as possible. That is only possible when we share our knowledge and fish. Please put the species you are interested in online.
